Adbri’s History in Geelong

Published 29 June 2022

Adbri have been involved in the operation of Batesford quarry for many years and took over the quarry and Geelong Cement in 1993. In 1999, Adbri made the decision to wind down cement manufacturing and close the existing Geelong Cement plant, located in Fyansford on Geelong’s Western Edge. The site was closed and demolition work commenced in May, 2001.

The land on the site associated with the manufacturing process was duly sold. The remaining land, comprising the quarry and quarry reserve (approximately 530 hectares) were retained. The rehabilitation plan has been prepared in consultation with the then Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (Victoria) and funds have been reserved for the activity required. In 2014, the quarry site and surrounds were identified as a part of a proposed Western Regional Growth Area as a part of Geelong’s overall growth strategy, which leads us to the implementation of the rehabilitation of the site and creation of the lake as part of that vision today.
